Already since 2004, the Institute for Print and Media Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology is maintaining a close partnership with the Department of Printing and Media Engineering at Manipal University, India. To link their core competencies, the two institutions have jointly developed an interdisciplinary double degree Master's programme, which was launched in 2008.

The research-based course, taught in English, is a two-year, full-time Master's degree programme with focus on new printing and media technologies. Besides conventional printing, the course emphasises innovative developments such as printed electronics, which has become one of the most promising areas in the printing industry in recent years. In contrast to conventional printing, which uses inks to produce coloured images, printed electronics makes use of novel materials and material combinations to print electronic devices, such as circuits, batteries, solar cells, displays, loudspeakers, etc. Being a hybrid field of study, the course draws upon a wide range of disciplines. With input from both academia and industry, the programme's interdisciplinary curriculum is uniquely designed to be relevant in many rapidly growing and diversifying markets.

The two-year research-oriented programme, which is taught in English, is based on the well-established Bachelor's programmes "Print and Media Technology" (Chemnitz University) and "Printing Technology" (Manipal University).Focussed on print media technology, the programme includes aspects of engineering, economics and business administration. It allows for an exceptional qualification profile due to an integrated study period at the partner institution, which enables the students to further develop their technical, intercultural and language skills. Students from Chemnitz University who opt for the double degree programme spend their 2nd semester at Manipal University, and double degree students from Manipal come to Chemnitz University for their 3rd and 4th semester. At the end of their studies, the students receive the degrees of both universities. Graduates are well prepared to enter responsible positions in the international print and media sector. The double degree project is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with means from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Funding includes scholarships for double degree students for their stay at the partner university.
